Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced on Tuesday, April 2, that a Manhattan (Harlem) man has been charged with first-degree murder and additional charges for fatally shooting a Bronx man in the Highbridge section of the borough, cutting up his body and trying to hide the remains.
Clark said Sheldon Johnson, last of 1350 Fifth Ave in Harlem, was arraigned in connection with the incident on Tuesday before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Verena Powell and was remanded in custody. Reacting to the charges, Clark said, “The defendant allegedly shot the victim in the head, and then carved up the man’s body and took drastic measures to hide the evidence. This crime was as cruel as it was gruesome.”
According to the investigation, and as reported at the time, on March 5, at around 1 a.m. inside 979 Summit Avenue in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, Johnson allegedly shot Collin Small, 44, multiple times in the head. Johnson allegedly dismembered him, cut off his head, and was seen on surveillance video leaving and entering Small’s apartment carrying multiple bags and cleaning supplies, allegedly wearing a wig, sunglasses, a mask, and different clothing.
On March 6, after the execution of a search warrant, the victim’s head and several body parts were found in the freezer in Johnson’s Manhattan apartment.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Kamens of the homicide bureau, under the supervision of Christine Scaccia, chief of the homicide bureau, and under the overall supervision of James Brennan, deputy chief of the trial division, and Theresa Gottlieb, chief of the trial division.
Johnson has been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, first-degree robbery, first degree burglary, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of second-degree burglary, third-degree robbery, third-degree burglary, tampering with physical evidence, and concealment of a human corpse. He is due back in court in June.
