Family members of the man killed in the partial building collapse in Norwood are turning to the public for help in paying for their loved one’s funeral.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Segundo Huerta, the 48-year-old worker crushed to death while working on a building that was under construction at 94 E. 208th St. near Steuben Avenue in Norwood.

Huerta, a father of five, immigrated from his home country of Ecuador.

“They need desperate help with the funeral expenses in the Bronx, and the burial expenses back home to Ecuador,” wrote the account’s organizer, Juana Guazhco.

The family is looking to raise $15,000. So far it’s raised $1,060 since the account was first created.

The partial collapse happened on Aug. 27 just before noon. Huerta, who was taking materials up to the structure’s third floor, had died at the scene. He was working with his relatives at the site, a four-story property that was to house eight units.

The federal agency known as OSHA has opened inspections at the site on Aug. 28. They’re now looking into whether the contractors–GC Pioneer General Construction Co., L.L.C of Brooklyn and subcontractor Favored Designs and Contracting, Inc. of the Bronx–had complied with the appropriate health and safety standards at the building site.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
