For the second time in as many weeks a pair of bandits has broken into a local GNC store and police and passersby were baffled to learn that the intruders were of the 4-legged kind.

Police were called to the vitamin supplement shop at 3453 Jerome Ave. along the Jerome-Gun Hill Business Improvement District at 9 a.m. on Sept. 29, for an “animal incident,” involving raccoons. A dispatcher quickly reported it had “one in custody.”

The four officers met the employee, who watched as the pair of furry creatures scurried about the store’s counter-tops and shelves in a search for food.

Asked how the raccoons got in, the employee pointed to the building insulation hanging out of the gaping hole in the drop-ceiling.

The unidentified employee revealed, “The same thing happened last week and we caught two of them.” This begged the question: how did they get onto the roof of a one-story commercial building in the first place?

The street in front of the store now packed with spectators, many snapping pictures as a trapper places a cage in the store. One police officer joked, “Maybe we can charge them with breaking and entering.”

One customer who wanted to get vitamins before boarding a plane to Africa, was forced to visit another store on Fordham Road as the GNC remained closed the entire day.

The trapper was expected to return Friday, when the clean-up and repair of the ceiling could begin. The raccoons were not considered rabid.
