The funeral details have been announced for 30-year-old Jonathan “Baby Jay” Ramos from Norwood, a father of three young children, who died following a car accident on Jerome Avenue in Norwood in the early hours of Sunday morning, Nov. 12, as reported. His wife remains in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital.

A cousin of Ramos, who asked not to be identified, said the funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 20, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Ortiz Funeral Home, located at 2580 Grand Concourse in Fordham Manor. The family asked that no kids attend the funeral, and that no videos or photos be taken during the service. The attached flier was also shared with us.

NYPD officials said that a preliminary investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that Ramos, who was driving a 2022 Honda Odyssey northbound on Jerome Avenue, allegedly failed to properly navigate the roadway and struck a tree. They said the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.

A local taxi driver, Srikanth Patori, mentioned to Norwood News how there have been ongoing roadworks in that stretch of the road (around Woodlawn subway station) for several months / years now. Patori said he believes the manhole covers and other obstacles (he was not sure of the exact word but we understand he meant pillars or bollards) are not “smooth” or correctly aligned with the road’s surface.

He said that unless a person is driving over such obstacles very slowly, they can potentially cause the same impact as hitting a curb suddenly. He said he believes the obstacles on Jerome Avenue are an inch or so higher than the road’s surface.

We asked DOT for comment on the Patori’s observations. They referred us to the NYPD. We have therefore asked the NYPD for comment and will update this story should we receive a response.

While the NYPD investigate criminal aspects of vehicle collisions, NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.

As reported, a cousin of the victim, who requested to remain anonymous, said a GoFundMe page has been set up to help with expenses. Of Ramos, his cousin said, “He left behind twin boys and a baby girl, while his wife is in the hospital, still fighting [for her life]. The gofund me page was created by Shealyn [sister-in-law to Ramos] to cover funeral costs and hope to support my cousins’ children in the process.”

A post on the page reads, “My name is Shealynn, and I’m the wife of Jonathan’s only older brother, Joel. On behalf of my husband and Jonathan’s family, they’ve asked anyone who knew him to help out if they could. We are deeply heartbroken and still can’t believe this unexpected, horrific tragic car accident.”

The post continued, “Jonathan was only 30 years old, and still had a whole life to live. He left behind his world and his three beautiful children without him. This is a major loss for our family and friends, and we ask that anyone who knew him come together to help with funeral costs and help for whatever help his children may need to navigate such a heavy loss.”

It concluded, “Anything will help, and even if you financially can’t, please repost. Funeral arrangements are to come, and we will post information to anyone interested in showing their respects.”

As reported, Norwood News was in contact the victim’s cousin in order to validate that the page is indeed legitimate, and this has since been confirmed. The page can be accessed here.

The victim’s cousin said Ramos loved music. “We will always remember my cousin as the proud father he was, and hard worker,” she said.
