Members of Fordham University’s rowing club were rescued while rowing in Eastchester Bay on Saturday afternoon, April 5, university officals have confirmed.

When contacted, Fordham University issued a statement which read, “Fordham can confirm that nine members of the men’s club rowing team were pulled from the water after their boat capsized due to a sudden shift in weather conditions on Eastchester Bay.”

It continued, “New York City regulations required that the nine student-athletes, and the eight additional students and two coaches who helped them, be taken to area hospitals for examination, because the party came ashore on city property at Rodman’s Neck. There were no injuries, and all of the individuals involved were examined and released. One of the club’s boats was lost in the mishap.”

According to various media reports, the rescue was reportedly carried out close to Rodman’s Neck, the NYPD’s main training facility which includes a number of gun ranges and bomb detonation areas.

When contacted about the rescue operation, the FDNY/EMS spokesperson said emergency services did not carry out the rescue and that the rowers had been picked up by a civilian boat.’

However, Norwood News also reached out to the NYPD for more information and were informed that the incdent took place at around 12.12  on Saturday afternoon, when officers responded to a 911 call regarding a water rescue in the Eastchester Bay near City Island, within the confines of the 45th Precinct.

“Upon arrival, the officers discovered two boats at shore with 18 occupants in the water,” a police spokesperson said. “Emergency Service Unit and NYPD Harbor responded and assisted with bringing all 18 occupants out of the water as well as recovering a boat.”

We asked if the department was aware of any help from a civilian boat in the rescue and will share any updates we receive.

The spokesperson said some of the 18 occupants were taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi in Morris Park, some to St. Barnabas Hospital in Belmont, and others to Montefiore Medical Center in Norwood all in stable condition.
