One man in his early 20s has died, and another man, also in his early 20s, was hospitalized following a second shooting incident in Fordham Manor on Saturday, March 30, police said.
An NYPD spokesperson said the second incident was reported to police at around 8.53 p.m., when officers responded to multiple 911 calls regarding shots fired at East 187th Street and Tiebout Avenue, a few blocks from the Grand Concourse and East Fordham Road, the location of an earlier afternoon shooting.
Of the latest second, evening shooting, the police spokeswoman said, “Upon arrival [at the crime scene], officers discovered a 25-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the chest, and a 23-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the stomach and buttocks.”
She continued, “Both victims were removed by EMS to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center where the 25-year-old male was pronounced deceased, and the 23-year-old male is listed in stable condition.”
The deceased was later identified as Frankelis Tavarez of East 194th Street in Fordham Manor.
Police said there were no arrests, and that the investigation remains ongoing. The crime scene appeared to take in a wide area with several streets blocked off on several sides, including Tiebout Avenue, East 187th Street, East 188th Street, and around Elm Place.
Numeric and other markers possibly indicating different shell casings were seen placed on the roadbed in different sections of the crime scene within the cordoned off area, and a dark blue vehicle also appeared to be marked as evidence by police though the area was not very well lit.
Norwood News spoke to some employees of local stores in the area and asked if they had seen or heard the shooting. One employee who declined to be identified for his own safety, said he and his colleague had been busy working earlier that evening and that he didn’t know what had happened.
Other local employees did not see or hear the incident unfold either but spoke of some prior bad encounters they had had with some customers which they said prompted calls to the police. More to follow.
As reported a 2-year-old boy was grazed with a bullet earlier on Saturday a few blocks from where the second nighttime shooting took place at the corner of East Fordham Road and the Grand Concourse.
