A 56-year-old man is stable in hospital after he was shot in Fordham Manor on Thursday, police said.
NYPD Community Affairs Officer Stephen Echevarria from the 52nd Precinct said the shooting took place on Thursday Oct. 31, at 12.35 a.m. “A call for a male shot came over 911 inside of Devoe Park,” Echevarria said. “When officers arrived, they found [a] male, 56 years old, shot once in the thigh.”
He said the victim was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and is in stable condition and the 52nd Precinct detective squad are currently investigating the incident which is believed to be domestic in nature.
At the Bronx Community Board 7 (CB7) general board meeting held at Monroe College on Tuesday, Oct. 22, Echevarria provided an overview of recent major crime statistics in the 52nd Precinct.
“Overall, the 52 Precinct is up on crime,” he said, adding that for the 28-day period ending Oct. 20, there had been two murders, five rapes, 41 robberies, 55 felony assaults, 18 burglaries, 76 major theft of personal property, and 22 vehicle thefts. One of the burglaries was of a smoke shop in Norwood, as reported.
The two homicides were on Morris Avenue, as reported, and the other on East 198th Street, as reported. “I know there has been an arrest on the one on East 198 Street,” Echevarria said. “We still don’t know what the motive for that incident was. It did happen during the daytime, actually, during the dismissal of a school which was nearby, so it was very concerning.”
Echevarria continued in part, “But we did respond within minutes, we did evaluate the scene, and there was no need to put the school on a lockdown.” He added that police knew at the time that the perpetrator had left the scene.
He added that the 52nd Precinct Community Council Meeting for October was due to take place on Thursday, Oct. 24, at Tracy Towers in Norwood, and which the 52nd Precinct commander, Deputy Inspector Chase A. Maneri, was due to attend. He said residents were free to ask Echevarria any questions they had.
He continued, saying, “We are actively recruiting for our next Citizen Police Academy. Next week will be the graduation [of the latest cohort]. We’ll have a couple of Bronx Community Board 7 members participating.” Echevarria added that the 52nd Precinct would start looking for new recruits in the spring. “If anybody’s interested in joining the Citizens Police Academy, please see me on the side,” he said.
Echevarria went on to say that the Precinct was also looking for a youth council representative between the ages of 14 and 21 to come to the 52nd Community Council meetings, hear local concerns, and share them at another Team Center located at the 42nd Precinct. “We will transfer the youth to and from those meetings, so don’t worry about getting them there or back home,” he said, adding police would make sure they got there and home safely.
“So if you know any students, maybe they’re studying law enforcement, maybe they’re into community relations, this will be a great opportunity for them to get involved with a bit of community service as well,” he said. The 52nd Precinct Community Affairs team can be reached on (718) 220-5824.

As reported, Donlon announced that his home was raided by federal agents, less than a week into his new job in September. In his statement, the interim commissioner said, in part, that the raid was unrelated to his work as police commissioner and that documents that had come into his possession around 20 years ago were removed during the search.
As reported, during his announcement of Donlon as the interim police commissioner, Adams said he had served as New York’s director of the Office of Homeland Security, ran the FBI National Threat Center and the FBI NYPD Joint Terrorist Task Force, and worked as the cold case agent investigating the 1993 Twin Towers bombing, as well as the attacks in U.S. embassy in Africa and the USS Cole in Yemen by al-Qaeda. When questioned about the raid on Donlon’s homes during a press conference on Tuesday, Sept. 24, the mayor referred to the case as “a private matter.”
