Pols Head NW Bronx Relief Efforts for Storm Victims

A couple of storm relief efforts are being coordinated in the northwest Bronx right now.

Today Nov., 5, up until 6:30 p.m., Bronxites looking to help storm victims can donate non-perishable goods, batteries, blankets, coats, and water. No clothes or financial donations will be accepted. The drop off is at Councilman Joel Rivera’s district office at 1901 Southern Boulevard, Bronx NY. For further details call (718) 842-8100, (917) 566-5520 or email Christine.Capetillo@council.nyc.gov.

Bronx Councilman Fernando Cabrera is coordinating “massive” relief efforts from the north side of the Kingsbridge Armory, 10 W. 195th Street, just off of Jerome Avenue, where the National Guard is housed. They are collecting donations and dispatching volunteers from the Armory 24 hours a day and will be doing so for the next two weeks, Cabrera said in a statement. Items needed for donation include: non-perishable food for adults and babies, blankets, generators, water pumps, non-prescription medication, batteries and pampers.

“Our city is hurting and now is the time for all New Yorkers to come together and do what they can to help our brothers and sisters in need,” Cabrera said. “In the Bronx, we are utilizing the Armory to stock-pile and distribute much needed supplies and donations. Today we are receiving 14 trucks of supplies and will be receiving donations of non-perishable food, bottled water, blankets, batteries and clothing for the next two weeks. If you wish to volunteer please call 718-473-6993.”

Yesterday, the Armory was supposed to get fuel tanker for Bronxites in need of gas, which has become a precious commodity in the aftermath of Hurrican Sandy. Hundreds of Bronxites showed up, but the fuel never arrived and people left frustrated and upset, as noted former Norwood News editor Jordan Moss on his Bronx Matters blog.

Cabrera, who was there along with State Senator Gustavo Rivera, criticized the state and federal governments for not coming through for Bronxites.

“I am looking for answers about the promised fuel trucks that were deployed and received in Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Long Island but have not made their way to the Bronx,” he said. “Federal and state governments were coordinating this effort and I am disappointed that the Bronx has been left out.”

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
