Community Board 7 voted to establish a committee aimed at improving the lives of U.S. military veterans, establishing a panel unseen in other local Community Boards.
“We’re going to send a clear message to everybody that we are going to honor their veterans and their families,” said Amjad Mujaahid, newly appointed chairman of the Board’s veterans committee, sporting a U.S. Marines Corp. jacket and hat.
Community Board 7’s district covers Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham, University Heights, and Kingsbridge, which is home to the James J. Peters Veterans Hospital. The federal medical center sees a slew of veterans throughout the Bronx, some of them homeless.
There are currently just under 5,000 veterans within Community Board 7’s boundaries, part of the less than 35,000 veterans living in the Bronx, according to U.S. Census figures. Yet, veteran committees are seldom throughout the city.
“We are the tip of the spear, leading the way for the way for the rest of the Bronx to get on board to support veterans and their families,” said Mujaahid, whose committee roster includes fellow U.S. military veterans.
The first order of business was throwing the support for an veterans job fair on June 19 at the Bronx Library Center.
The group passed a motion to meet the first Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m.
I applauded Community Board 7 and Mr.Amjad Mujaahid for establishing a community Veteran Board. But his statement ““We are the tip of the spear, leading the way for the way for the rest of the Bronx to get on board to support veterans and their families” . Many organizations such as the American Legion, IAVA, VFW, Work Force 1, Mission Continues, NYCSERVES, Wounded Warrior, MOVA, plus the Borough President’s Veteran Advisory Council has been doing this for many years through out the Bronx.

Those organizations haven’t been doing a dam thing for years. As long as any veteran has to register and sleep at Bellevue Hospital, and/or Bedford Avenue Men’s Shelter for indoctrination into the DSH Homeless facility, we haven’t done a damm thing.
Yes there are many organizations around to help veterans, but to many Veterans are falling “through the cracks”. How many go to these organizations and don’t receive the help they need. Which are really doing a good job of serving our vets. I say the more we have the better. Instead of saying how many there are, how about saying where can I work with you and your Veterans Committee to help a veteran get what he or she needs,
