Financial Focus: When Does Your Dollar Turn Into 80 Cents?

Financial Focus: When Does Your Dollar Turn Into 80 Cents?

Ever wonder if your money is ever getting ahead in life? That every time you spend a dollar, why does it feel that everything is so expensive?

Or let me put it another way: why does it feel like your money is being devalued?

That’s simple! The answer is, it is!.

So what devalues money, especially from one state to another? Many things: city and state taxes, inflation, and/or business greed.

The value of your money fluctuates from state to state, coast to coast.

And we on the East Coast know what that means, right? Everything is too high? Or is your money devaluing too fast? Maybe more importantly, for retirement sake, is the value of money going up elsewhere while money is going down in your state? Of course!

The Tax Foundation, a partisan watchdog organization, recently looked at the value of $100 and looked at all 50 states.

I just finished a client income taxes (extension season) and as we went over all her expenses she jokingly said to me, “You know, I would be so much richer if I just moved to Alabama.”

Little did she know how right she is!

Looking at the chart, if she brings $100 to Alabama, her money will automatically increase by almost 17 percent.

Looking at the chart further you can see that only 28 percent of the United States is living at or above what I call “the $100 line.”

So if you want your money to increase to you can save or Invest it. But that only gives you more “devaluation” if you are saving in a devalued place like New York.

So want more money? Move! Alabama? Maybe!

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
