A female police officer from the 50th Precinct was struck in the head in broad daylight in Kingsbridge, police said. The assault, caught on camera by members of the public, occurred on Monday, April 17, at around 2 p.m. according to the NYPD.
Additional police units were requested to assist at the scene at 231st Street and Broadway, located in the 50th Precinct, and the location of a police-involved shooting on the elevated train tracks on Thursday, April 13.
An NYPD spokesperson said, “An on-duty female officer had been approached by an unknown individual who struck her in the head with a bottle. EMS responded to the location and transported the victim to St. Barnabas Hospital to be treated for her injuries. The victim is stable. The individual was placed into custody on scene.”
Police later confirmed that Jose Garcia, 45, of Sedgwick Avenue in Kingsbridge Heights was arrested on Monday, April 17, and charged with assault, obstruction of government administration, resisting arrest, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, and harassment.
Norwood News asked the NYPD if they if had any knowledge of whether or not the attack was in response to the police-involved shooting which took place at the same location on Thursday, April 13, as reported. A spokesperson responded, saying, “The incident remains ongoing by the Force Investigation Division.”
A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
