Family and friends paid their final respects to the Hon. Aurelia Greene, the former New York State assemblywoman and Bronx deputy borough president, who died on Saturday, May 8, as reported by Norwood News.
The former deputy borough president lay-in-state in the Rotunda of the Bronx County Courthouse from Monday, May 17 until Wednesday, May 19.
A service was held on Thursday, May 19, at the Bronx Christian Charismatic Prayer Fellowship at 1069 Morris Avenue, the same church where her husband, the late Dr. Jerome Greene, had been pastor.
A homegoing service was then held on Thursday, May 20, at Thessalonia Worship Center in the South Bronx before Greene was later interred at the Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y. It was followed by a funeral repast at The Andrew Feedman Home on the Grand Concourse.
Greene was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1982, where she represented the Highbridge, Concourse and Morris Heights sections of the borough. In 2009, she became deputy borough president to Bronx BP Ruben Diaz, Jr. She had retired in 2017.
As reported previously by Norwood News, a number of elected officials issued various statements in tribute to the former deputy borough president, following her passing.
Greene was presented with the Key to the Borough by Diaz Jr. in 2018. At the time, BronxNet put together a video showcasing why she was being honored. “She deserved so much more,” Diaz Jr. said as part of his tribute to Greene after her passing. “On behalf of my entire team, and the 1.4 million Bronx residents, I offer my prayers and condolences to her two children, Rhonda and Russell, her grandchildren, and all of her loved ones. To my partner of over eight years in borough hall, my friend, and one of my mentors, you will truly be missed. May you rest in peace.”
