Maybe three times the charm?
Manhattan state senator Adriano Espaillat is once again running for the 13th Congressional Seat, which covers Norwood and has long been occupied by Congressman Charles Rangel.
His decision, falling a day after the General Election, marks his third attempt at making a run for Capitol Hill. He nearly unseated Rangel in a closely watched race many interpreted as a sign of shifting demographics in a largely black congressional district. Espaillat, who was born in the Dominican Republic, represents the && Senate District, which covers several neighborhoods that are largely Hispanic.
The 13th Congressional District mostly represents Harlem, though a portion of it covers the northwest Bronx, including Norwood.
“During my career in public service, I’ve made it my mission to fight for Northern Manhattan and the Bronx,” said Espaillat, in a released statement. “I’ve served our community as a tenant organizer; police precinct council president; assemblyman; and state senator. I have worked tirelessly to confront a lack of economic opportunities, to provide access to affordable housing and quality education, and keep our neighborhoods safe.”
Espaillat now joins a growing field of contenders vying for the seat, made even more attractive with Rangel announced he will not run again.
He needs to get out more in the Bronx part of the congressional district. The last time, his efforts were mainly to shake hands at the 231 St subway station. Rangel, has emerged from his coffin and has lately had some Bronx events.
