Congressman Adriano Espaillat, who represents New York’s 13th congressional district (NY-13), released a statement on Thursday, March 4, to encourage high school students throughout New York’s 13th congressional district to submit entries to this year’s Congressional Art Competition.

The national contest is open to high school students from around the district to showcase their artistic talents and provides an opportunity for students to display their winning art in the United States Capitol for up to one year.

Espaillat serves as a national co-host of this year’s art competition, which is open to high school students from around the nation. The deadline to submit entries from NY-13 is Friday, April 30.

There is no required theme. However, artwork that highlights the culture and diversity of New York’s 13th congressional district is highly encouraged. The original artwork may include digital submissions of paintings, drawings, collages, and photography. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, artwork may be submitted from the 2019 school year, the 2020 virtual school year and the current 2021 hybrid year, as many communities continue to navigate the reopening process for students and families.

“New York is home to some of the world’s most celebrated artists and that artist talent starts early,” said Espaillat. “I am proud to serve as a co-host of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition and encourage high school students from my district, and from around the nation to submit their artwork for a chance to showcase their creativity and artist talents as part of this outstanding program.”

The 13th district comprises Upper Manhattan and The Bronx neighborhoods of Bedford Park, Jerome Park, Kingsbridge Heights, Norwood, and portions of Fordham, Kingsbridge, Morris Heights and University Heights.
