Election Day Dispatches: Long, But Efficient Lines at Mosholu Montefiore Community Center

Early this afternoon, there were about 15 people waiting in the line to vote outside the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center poll site at the corner of Dekalb Avenue and Gun Hill Road. Not too bad, unless you consider the additional 100 people voting inside.

Fortunately, the line appeared to be moving swiftly.

The voters ranged from young adults to senior citizens. Jose Rivera (not the assemblyman from the Fordham area who’s up for re-election today at age 75) just finished voting and said the process was very quick and easy. The only downfall about the voting process for Rivera was that he had trouble seeing the names listed below Barak Obama’s name.

Even though there are a lot of people voting, the poll workers appear to have it under control, assisting everyone who needs help and moving everyone along to make voting fast and easy.

According to Diana Curtis, a poll worker, the site has had voters coming in since 6 a.m. She estimated 2,000 people had voted at this site, including folks from neighborhood in Staten Island and Queens, who, like all New Yorkers, are allowed to vote anywhere today using affidavit ballots.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
