A 25-year-old male driver has died in a single vehicle accident in Eastchester after allegedly losing control of his vehicle on a bend, overshooting a ramp, and driving into a home located beneath an elevated thruway.
On Thursday, May 26, at approximately 6.57 p.m., police responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle accident on the southbound New England Thruway near exit 14, in Eastchester, located in the 47th precinct.
Police officials said, “A preliminary investigation determined that a 2009 black, Mercedes Benz C300 sedan [was] travelling southbound on the New England Thruway.” They said the vehicle exited the roadway when it fell onto the road below.
NYPD officials added, “The vehicle failed to properly navigate the curvature of the ramp, prior to driving off the roadway.” They added, “The forward momentum caused the vehicle to continue to travel for a short distance.” The vehicle came to a stop when it crashed into a home located at 2555 Pelham Bay Park West, causing minor property damage.
Police said the driver of the vehicle, a 25-year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle via the rear windshield, and sustained trauma to his body. EMS transported him to Jacobi Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
The front seat passenger of the vehicle, a 28-year-old woman, suffered a leg injury and was also transported to Jacobi Medical Center. She was in stable condition. There were no other vehicles involved in the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad (CIS).
The identification of the deceased is pending proper family notification.
For CIS investigations, NYPD handles all criminal investigations, while NYC DOT reviews the street design at the locations of the crashes.
