District Council 9 commenced a formal structural steel and bridge painter apprenticeship recruitment drive on May 8, which continues to May 19, at the District Council 9 Finishing Trades Institute of New York (DC 9) training center in Long Island City, NY. The recruitment drive covers applicants from New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley regions.

DC 9 is a chapter of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, an organization of painters, decorators, wall coverers, drywall finishers, sign painters, metal polishers, bridge & structural steel painters, civil service painters, lead abatement workers, glaziers & architectural metal glassworkers, paint makers and allied trades. Representatives of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades say the union is dedicated to securing and improving wages, benefits, and overall working conditions for its members.

According to DC 9, the New York based Institute offers apprentices on-the-job and in-classroom training to ensure every apprentice is prepared to tackle what was described as the complex building market. They said DC 9 apprenticeships offer New Yorkers a pathway to a stable career with family-sustaining wages and benefits.

According to DC 9, the recruitment drive will continue for 10 days or until 750 applications are distributed, whichever comes first. DC 9 representatives said applications are being distributed in person on a first-come, first-served basis at the DC 9 training facility.

Business manager / secretary treasurer of DC 9, Joseph Azzopardi, said, “District Council 9 conducts many apprenticeship recruitments throughout the year to introduce hardworking New Yorkers to a career in the trades. Our apprenticeship programs provide in-depth training that allow us to build a top-notch workforce, while creating pathways to the middle class for workers.” He added, “We are excited to be conducting this structural steel and bridge painter recruitment [drive] to welcome the next class of union workers to DC 9.”
