Rise Up NYC Concerts and New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday, July 30, that the City would be “taking over Crotona Park in The Bronx” with a popular, summer, three-day, outdoor music festival kicking off on Thursday, Aug. 1, and continuing through Saturday, Aug, 3.

“Are you ready to Rise UP, New York?” the mayor asked. “That’s three nights of music, fun, and New Yorkers coming together,” he added. The Chuck Chillout 40th Radio Anniversary Party kicks off the festival on Thursday, Aug. 1, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. as part of the SummerStage in Crotona Park, located at 1700 Crotona Ave, The Bronx, 10457.

Chuck Chillout was one of the first radio DJs to help get hip-hop on the airwaves in New York City in the 1980s, according to the event promoters. “In celebration of his 40th anniversary on the radio, ‘Uncle’ Ralph McDaniels and Bugsy host a bevy of old-school MCs and DJs at a party high on nostalgia and hip-hop history,” they said.

The festival line-up includes the former gangster rapper and current Hollywood star Ice T; Brownsville, Brooklyn duo M.O.P., of “Ante Up” fame; Schoolly D, the influential Philly rapper and Afrocentric innovator who wrote the theme song to Cartoon Network’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force; Peter Gunz & Lord Tariq, whose Steely Dan-sampling hit “Déjá Vu” is an enduring Uptown classic; Queens duo Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rud, who cut the cult classic 1988 LP Girls I’ve Got ‘Em Locked; and CL Smooth, whose work with Pete Rock stands as some of the best rap of hip-hop’s Golden Age.

It also includes Joeski Love, the MC best known for his massive 1986 single “Pee Wee’s Dance”; Pioneers D.J. Breakout and the Funky Four + 1, one of the earliest hip-hop groups to form in The Bronx, and featured in the classic film ‘Wild Style;’ The Ultramagnetic MCs, the legendary Bronx crew that produced Kool Keith; NINE, the Bronx MC who caught his break on Funkmaster Flex and the Ghetto Celebs’ “Six Million Ways to Die”; Al B. Sure!; and Camp Lo, the Bronx duo comprising Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede, whose enduring hit “Luchini (This Is It)” is one of the most recognizable songs in hip-hop.

DJ Chuck Chillout himself will also perform alongside his MC partner Kool Chip.

On Friday, Aug. 2, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., SummerStage in Crotona Park continues with the Tedsmooth Freestyle Jam featuring Coro, C-Bank, DJ Serg, Anthony Mangini, Tedsmooth, JAYBOOGIENYC, and Strafe.

DJ Tedsmooth, of 94.7 The Block in NYC is known as the “Remix King” for his inventive and infectious remixes of popular songs, has brought houses down at Latin and hip-hop clubs throughout New York City and internationally for decades. For this year’s festival, he brings to the Bronx’s Crotona Park a crew of legendary DJs and artists proficient in the decidedly NYC genre of freestyle — an upbeat style of electronic dance music particularly popular with Puerto Ricans and Italians that dominated clubs in the ’80s.

These include Coro, the former Miami Vice actor who collaborated with Stevie B and Todd Terry; C-Bank, the duo originally comprising of vocalist Jenny Burton and currently Brenda Rodriguez, along with the production and remix legend, John Robie, best known for their 1983 hit “One More Shot” & “I Won’t Stop Loving You.” The line-up also includes Westchester party rockers DJ Serg and Anthony Mangini; remixer and Tedsmooth collaborator JAYBOOGIENYC; and Strafe, the electro hip-hop group primarily known for their single “Set It Off,” which has been sampled countless times since its release in 1984.

The SummerStage in Crotona Park festival continues on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in association with GhanaFest-NY, with King Promise, Dan Price the Artist, and DJ Faddah Faddah.

For the 15th time, GhanaFest brings its annual public installation and celebration of Ghanaian culture and heritage to residents of and visitors to New York City. This year’s event is headlined by King Promise, the Accra-born artist who’s quickly become one of the most sought-after names in highlife and Afrobeats music.

Of late, he’s drawn inspiration from Ghanaian drill, the South African Amapiano scene, and British artists such as NSG and Headie One. His latest LP, 5 Star, finds him ruminating on what he finds most important: family, life, and love. He’s joined by the nascent Bronx Afrobeats singer Dan Price the Artist and DJ Faddah.
