Newly elected Bronx congressman in the 16th congressional district, Jamaal Bowman, issued a statement on Wednesday, Jan. 6, to confirm that he was safe and secure following the breach of the Capitol by white supremacist extremists incited by President Donald Trump earlier that day. It has been reported that four people have been killed. Bowman joined Congressman Cori Bush (D-MO) in calling for the impeachment of the president and the expulsion of the Republican members of Congress who he said allegedly incited the attack on the Capitol. He also described the president’s remarks to protestors as “open sedition.”

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out to check in. Myself and my staff are safe and sheltering,” the congressman said. “What we saw today was an attempted coup, fueled by white supremacy and a fascist in the White House—the logical extension of our failure to reconcile our history. This IS America. As a start, we must remove Trump from office immediately. Then we must get to work to pursue a mission of truth and reconciliation with our country’s racist and violent past and present.”

Meanwhile, on Wednesday evening, Bronx Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) also lent her support to a call for impeachment by her fellow congresswoman, Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, and is, like Ocasio-Cortez and Bowman, an unofficial member of the so-called “squad,” deemed to represent the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. The congresswoman was succinct. “Donald Trump must be impeached,” she tweeted.

Earlier the same day, as the attack unfolded, newly elected Bronx Congressman, Ritchie Torres, (NY-15) tweeted that he and his staff had been ordered to evacuate the Cannon building.

On Thursday, Jan. 7, during a live streamed press conference, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also called for the 25th amendment (impeachment proceedings) to be invoked against President Trump, calling him “a very dangerous man”. She described seeing the frightened looks on the faces of young staffers at Capitol Hill during the attack and how they hid under tables and barricaded themselves into rooms out of fear.

Also on Thursday, New York Senator Chuck Schumer tweeted that the quickest and most effective way to remove the president would be for Vice President Mike Pence to immediately invoke the 25th amendment, saying, “It can be done today. If the Vice President and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress must reconvene to impeach President Trump.”

In response, Torres tweeted, “I  am still at the Capitol, and I am ready and willing to join in my Congressional colleagues in effectuating the removal of @realDonaldTrump.”

On the morning of Jan. 7, Bowman and other elected officials voted to certify the results of the Electoral College and President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the Nov. 3 presidential election, also ratifying Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris’s ascension to the office of Vice President.

Business Insider reported that some among U.S. military allies believe the president allegedly attempted a coup, with alleged help from federal law enforcement.

It was later reported by The NY Daily News that U.S. Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund quit following his apparent botched handling of the violent Pro-Trump insurrection. Meanwhile, National Geographic provided a visual overview of the day’s unprecedented events.

On the evening of Jan. 7, Kaleigh McEnany the White House press secretary, delivered a statement on the previous day’s events. “I am here to deliver this message on behalf of the entire White House,” she said. “Let me be clear. The violence we saw yesterday at our nation’s capital was appalling, reprehensible and antithetical to the American way. We condemn it, the president and this administration, in the strongest possible terms. It is unacceptable and those that broke the law should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

People really don’t realize what they’re making. Trump supporters are giving the world more reason for having Joe Biden as president. America, this is not us, protesting is great but it won’t change who becomes president. We destroyed things, broke into Washington’s properties, and broke the law. Were better than this…
