This morning, Norwoodians could hear the echo of Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj’s uttering throughout the neighborhood. The voice came from the assemblyman’s Gjonaj C.A.R.E.S. van encouraging registered voters to take time out today to vote. His talk on civic responsibility came with a slant–he encouraged folks to vote in the 13th Congressional Primary race between incumbent Congressman Charles Rangel and rivals State Sen. Adriano Espaillat and Rev. Michael Walrond. Gjonaj’s shuttling around the neighborhood came on behalf of Espaillat.
With twelve hours left before the polls closed, both sides are ramping up their mobilization efforts Bronxites to head to their local schools or community centers to push that lever for a candidate. Polls will remain open until 9pm. For a full list of polling sites, click here.
Rangel comes into the last day of campaigning with a double-digit lead over Espaillat, who has disputed the numbers in several media reports. Espaillat has received endorsements from a local level, primarily the Bronx Democratic establishment pols. Rangel has received backing from fellow men and women in the federal legislature.
The Norwood News is fanning out this evening to capture highlights made at the respective gatherings held this evening. Reporters will be out in Manhattan, where Rangel and Espaillat will hold presumptive victory parties.
This van went north on Bainbridge Ave around 4:35pm on primary day, blasting music and shaking the ground it was so loud. This was right outside of Montefiore Medical Center and the amount of noise and commotion was unnecesary and had nothing to do with encouraging people to vote. Most people had no clue what the van and jarring music were about. They should have been ticketed.
