A teenager is in custody and has been charged with murder after a fatal shooting took place on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 27, in the Concourse section of the Bronx, police said.
An NYPD spokesperson said, “14.14 hours (2.14 p.m.), East 161 Street and Morris Avenue, a 29-year-old male victim was struck by gunfire in the chest.”
The intersection is co-named Black Lives Matter Boulevard.
The spokespersn continued, “A 15-year-old male teen was taken into custody, a firearm was recovered.”
He added, “The 29-year-old victim was transported EMS to [NYC Health + Hospitals] Lincoln, where he was pronounced deceased.”
Police later said that officers assigned to a footpost at East 161st Street and Morris Avenue had seen the teen shoot the victim multiple times in the chest and subsequently flee the location on foot.
They said those officers pursued the suspect to East 161st Street and Courtlandt Avenue, where they arrested him.
They said the identification of the deceased is pending proper family notification.
In the early hours of Thursday, Nov. 28, police said the unidentified 15-year-old had been charged on Wednesday afternoon at 2.55 p.m. with second-degree murder, first degree manslaughter, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
The location of the shooting at the corner of East 161st Street and Morris Avenue is outside Bronx Hall of Justice, which houses Bronx Criminal Court.
We had earlier asked the NYPD if they could confirm if either the victim or the shooter had been involved in any criminal proceedings at the courthouse or if the shooting was related in any way to any criminal case.
The spokesperson said, “That’s not information that I have at this time.”
The Morrisania Revitalization Corporation (MRC) is located diagonally across from the Bronx Hall of Justice. MRC was incorporated in 1981 as a not-for-profit community housing corporation, according to its website.
“For over 30 years, MRC has been serving the Morrisania section of the Bronx, one of the most underserved communities in New York City, by carrying out community development activities including housing development, property management and building maintenance, social service support, education, job training, and food services,” an extract from its website reads.
It continues, “Since its inception, MRC has been funded by the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) to operate as a Neighborhood Preservation Company (NPC).
MRC has provided housing relocation, entitlement assistance and served as a catalyst for community and tenant associations, as well as a support provider for economic development activities.”
A short video of the aftermath of the scene can be viewed here.
What appeared to be a a few pools of blood and a bloodied piece of clothing were seen on the sidewalk outside Delicious Cafe deli, located on the corner opposite the courthouse corner at East 161st Street and Morris Avenue.
Further down East 161st Street towards Park Avenue, a pair of broken spectacles were seen behind crime scene tape, though neither the blood pools nor the spectacles appeared to be numerically marked as evidence, at least while we were present.
We asked some local residents and employees if they had seen the shooting take place but nobody we spoke to had any information as they were not in the area at the time it occurred.
Meanwhile, no D trains were running on Wednesday evening between nearby 161st Street-Yankee Stadium subway station in The Bronx, and 34th Street-Herald Square in Manhattan. “Take 4 from 161 St-Yankee Stadium to Manhattan. Take 1/2/3 in Manhattan,” MTA officials had said.
They continued, “Our crews and the Dept of Environmental Protection addressed a water main break at 103rd St/Central Park W. Our crews and the Dept of Environmental Protection addressed a water main break at 103rd St/Central Park W. B/C service is completely suspended.”
“There is no A/D service in most of Manhattan, and A/D service is running with severe delays in the rest of the city. We expect that this will last at least through the afternoon rush hour.” they added. Check the MTA app for updates.
