Changes, Unexpected and Impending, Seen at Norwood’s Churches

By DAVID CRUZ

Norwood’s catholic churches are undergoing a dual shift in its religious staffing, as one church is expected to close while another has seen the reassignment of its pastor.

For the last few months, the community has been bracing for the closure the Shrine Church of St. Ann’s on Bainbridge Avenue, a historic parish that includes a catholic school. But lack of finances had put the church on a closure list by the Archdiocese of New York. It’s last day will be July 31 when parishioners are expected to take part in the church’s last Feast of St. Ann’s, a celebratory festival enjoyed by hundreds.

But even before the closing, parishioners have heard that St. Ann’s lead pastor, Fr. Francis Scanlon, had been already reassigned to a church in Yonkers.

Norwood residents were also surprised to heard that in St. Brendan’s on East 207th Street and Perry Avenue, it’s lead pastor, Father George Stewart, was relocated to Our Lady of Victory Church in the Claremont section of the Bronx. Fr. Stewart was unavailable for comment despite numerous attempts at reaching him.

Editor’s Note: The Norwood News will be there to cover the Feast of St. Ann’s festival July 31.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. Father Stewart helped me begin the new journey in my life. He was reassigned as I left the bronx, both of us on same day to begin again. I will miss our talks and his support.

This proud Catholic-Schooled Grammar Geek must point out incorrect use of “it’s” – twice. No apostophe needed in either case.

You’re a newspaper, for crying out loud! Get it right!
