Petition Launched on Change.Org to Stop the Sale of Van Cortlandt Jewish Center
An online petition was launched by a group called “Van Cortlandt” on June 9 on www.change.org to stop the proposed sale to a developer, as reported, of the Van Cortlandt Jewish Center (VCJC), located in the Van Cortlandt Village section of The Bronx. Though petitioners were asked to sign the petition by June 21, it appears to still be available.
UPDATE As Heatwave Continues into Weekend, EMS & Health Department Urge New Yorkers to Take Precautions
NYC Emergency Management and the NYC health department are reminding New Yorkers to take precautions to beat the heat as the current heatwave continues into the weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) has advised that a heat advisory is in effect until Sunday, June 23, at 8 p.m. Hot and humid conditions are in the forecast throughout the weekend, with heat index values in the upper 90s to 100 across the city.
City Council Passes Sanchez Bill Inspired by Billingsley Terrace Partial Building Collapse
The New York City Council announced on Thursday, June 20, the passage of Int. No. 904-A, a bill designed to establish a first-of-its-kind, proactive inspection program at NYC Department of Buildings (DOB). The Billingsley Terrace Structural Integrity Act was introduced by City Council Member Pierina Sanchez (C.D. 14) on April 25, as reported, in response to the partial building collapse that occurred at 1915 Billingsley Terrace in Morris Heights on Dec. 11, 2023, forcing over 150 tenants to lose their homes, as reported.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson hosted the annual Juneteenth flag-raising celebration outside Borough Hall located at 851 Grand Concourse on Tuesday, June 18. Signed into law on May 17, 2021, by U.S. President Joe Biden, Juneteenth is celebrating its 3rd year as an official U.S. holiday commemorating the end of slavery in Texas and the United States.
