Bronx Marks World AIDS Day Amid High HIV Rates

  The following is an extended version of the story that appears in our latest print edition.   Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson hosted an event to mark World AIDS Day on Fordham Plaza on Thursday, Dec. 1 to spread awareness about AIDS, a life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that attacks the immune system of the patient. UPDATE MTA Announces Progress on Long-Awaited Mosholu Parkway Subway Elevator

Plans to install the long-awaited elevator at Mosholu Parkway subway station, which serves the 4 line, and which is located at the border of Jerome Park and Norwood, are finally taking shape according to The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Veterans’ Plaque Grounded After 1st Veterans’ Flagging Event Held at Bronx Victory Memorial

  A plaque commemorating Bronx veterans, located at the Bronx Victory Memorial on Mosholu Parkway in Bedford Park, was photographed on the ground some time before Saturday, Dec. 10. UPDATE University Heights: Man, 44, Arrested on Murder Charges after Fatal Stabbing

Police have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 28-year-old man in University Heights.   Police said the incident occurred on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at around 5.04 a.m. Police responded to a call regarding an assault which took place at the corner of 183rd Street and University Avenue.   “Upon arrival, officers observed a 28-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive with a stab wound to the torso,” a police spokesperson said. “EMS responded to the scene and transported the male to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Annual Tradition Continues as Volunteers Feed Thousands for Thanksgiving in Fordham Manor & Bedford Park

Dozens of volunteers donated, cooked, and prepared thousands of meals for residents in Fordham Manor, Bedford Park, and other neighborhoods across The Bronx, as residents were treated to traditional Thanksgiving dinners either in person or to go on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24.   Parishioners at Fordham United Methodist Church, located on Marion Avenue in Fordham Manor, were still only providing meals “to go” as COVID-19 protocols would continue for a third year. St. Patrick’s Home Says “Thank You” to Special Female Veteran Resident on Veterans Day

St. Patrick’s Home Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, located on Van Cortlandt Park South in Norwood, has fifteen veteran residents and all were honored this year by way of a number of celebratory events held at the 264-bed, skilled nursing facility to mark Veterans Day.   One veteran who stood out is the facility’s only female veteran resident, 71-year-old Beverly Bowne. Bowne served in the U.S. Army from 1975 to 1978 and was a telecommunication specialist assigned to Heidelberg, Germany. According to St. Patrick’s Home representatives, Bowne had a very important duty, working as a communication specialist with the U.S.
