Participatory Budgeting Shows District-wide Enhancements

Residents of 11th Council District should expect new district-wide improvements including bus count-down clocks and security cameras, thanks to Councilman Andrew Cohen’s participatory budgeting process. Cohen gathered with volunteers and community organizers at the Rambling House bar/restaurant in Woodlawn to announce the results of the process in which local residents vote on what community improvement projects to spend a portion of his 2017 fiscal year budget on. Bronx Youth Empowerment Program Celebrates 10 Years

  The Bronx Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) rang in their 10th anniversary with its yearly Youth Speaks event on April 20 at the Richard R. Green School auditorium. The event was complete, with several performances leading into a panel discussion to make up this year’s theme of excelling in life. Youth Speaks is hosted by Bronx YEP in partnership with Councilman Andy King, founded in that same auditorium by King and his wife Neva Shillingford-King. They developed the Youth Empowerment program after the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club closed down, which left around 60 kids with nowhere to go

P.S. 94 Adopts Life Building Program

Fifth graders at a local school are gaining some real life skills, helping younger students while making money. Every school day for about one hour, a handful of students from the fifth grade class at P.S. 94 on King’s College Place tutor kindergarteners in different subjects such as math and reading. The Norwood school participates in the Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program, a program that’s typically implemented in junior high and high school.
