Unity Dems, Rivera Campaign for “Yes” Vote to Prop 1

The Unity Democratic Club joined State Sen. Gustavo Rivera (S.D. 33) on Sunday, Oct. 13, in Riverdale to urge voters to flip their ballot and vote “Yes” to Proposition 1 (Prop 1) in the upcoming general election on Nov. 5. Prop 1 is one of six proposals on the ballot this year and requires a vote by New Yorkers on whether to change the State Constitution, after the NY State Legislature passed the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in two consecutive legislative sessions.

Bronx Afterschool Programs Celebrate Lights On After School

The nonprofit, Good Shepherd Services, announced on Thursday, Oct. 24, that the afterschool programs at three Fordham Heights schools, P.S. 386, the School for Environmental Citizenship at Creston Acdemy, M.S. 447, also at Creston Academy, and P.S. 279, Captain Manuel Rivera, Jr., recently celebrated the “Lights On Afterschool” initiative, a nationwide program launched in October 2000, to showcase the importance and impact of afterschool programs.

NY Lottery: Two Top Prize-Winning Tickets Sold in The Bronx

The New York Lottery announced on Oct. 23 that multiple top-prize winning tickets were sold for the Oct 22 Take 5 midday drawing. The tickets were sold at Prayosha Pharmacy Corp, located at 54 East 183rd Street in The Bronx, which sold one prize-winning ticket worth $5,856, and at Brentwood Pharmacy located at 761 Suffolk Avenue in Brentwood, which sold two prize-winning tickets worth $5,856 each. 

Politicians & Gun Control Activists Hail Passage of Additional New York State Gun Control Bills into Law

Alongside gunshot survivor, gun control activist, and former Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, New York government officials, and other gun safety advocates, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed into State law a new package of six bills on Wednesday, Oct. 9, which elected officials say will strengthen New York’s gun laws, by taking action against dangerous “pistol convertors,” by requiring gun sellers to post tobacco-style safety warnings on their products, and by providing other new tools and resources to help protect more New Yorkers from gun violence. 

Manhattan College Announces Name Change To Manhattan University

Manhattan College announced on Aug. 21 that it has changed its name to Manhattan University. University officials said this was in order to better recognize its more than 100 majors, minors, graduate programs, and advanced certificates and degrees, and to attract a more globally diverse student body. The New York State Board of Regents approved the name change on Aug. 1.
