UPDATE Bronx Community District 7 Residents Disappointed with Delays in CB7 Parks’ Budget Requests

Bronx Community Board 7 (CB7) Parks committee spent much of their September meeting discussing the district’s needs from a parks, recreation and cultural affairs perspective, in preparation for the City’s budget discussions next year. Since many of CB7’s capital and expense requests previously submitted last year to various city agencies have been pending for several years, some residents voiced their concern and frustration at the delays in actioning those requests.

Another Man Found Dead in Van Cortlandt Park

An unidentified man was found unresponsive inside Van Cortlandt Park on Sunday, with one police officer at the scene describing the death as “suspicious,” while a police spokesman later said the body showed no obvious signs of trauma.

Swimmers See No Danger in Bronx River Swims

Following our recent story on unsupervised swims in the Bronx River over the summer and despite some drowning incidents in New York City this summer, swimmers, mostly teens and young children, were once again observed having an unsupervised swim in the river last month. Two sources say the practice has been going on for years, if not decades.

Montefiore Holds Maternal Child Health Competency Fair

Montefiore Health System officials recently announced the launch of a new nursing education program which provides annual competency training and skills fairs for nurses across its maternal child health departments and neonatal intensive care units at its Wakefield campus, at 600 East 233rd Street, and its Weiler campus at 1825 Eastchester Road in Morris Park.

UPDATE Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” Moved to Loreto Playground on Friday, Sept. 6

The Public Theater will hold its final “Movies Under the Stars” screening on Friday, Sept. 6, at Loreto Playground, located 1111 Van Nest Avenue, Bronx, NY 10461, of the acclaimed, free “Shakespeare in the Park” production of William Shakespere’s play, Much Ado About Nothing. [The screening was originally due to be shown at Bronx Park East but has since been moved.] The show starts at 8 p.m. 

NYC Parks Launches Pizza-Box Trash Cans to Help Manage Trash & Discourage Rats

Pizza boxes, difficult to fit in typical trash cans, can now be disposed in specially designed trash cans in five parks citywide. NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue announced the installation of the new trash receptacles, custom-designed for the disposal of pizza boxes, on Aug. 30. Through the new initiative, visitors at parks throughout the city can dispose of their empty pizza boxes in these dedicated containers, rather than forcing the rectangular boxes into circular bins.
