Open Letter to the Bronx By Mayor Bill de Blasio

This week my administration is moving City Hall to the Bronx for a week. It’s something we like to call “City Hall in Your Borough.” Monday through Friday I’ll be working from the Bronx County Courthouse with many of the key people in city government. On Tuesday, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., we’ll be hosting the City Resource Fair at The Bronx County Building. You can sign up at nyc.gov/Bronx or call (212) 748-0281. You can meet with us and share your concerns, questions and suggestions. On Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m., we’ll be at the Adlai E. Stevenson High

De Blasio Administration Brings Essential City Resources to the Bronx

Bronx residents have the chance to take their gripes directly to senior administrators from various city agencies at a first-ever City Resource Fair on May 23, saving the cumbersome trip to downtown Manhattan where many officials are headquartered. Higher ups from city departments for transportation, parks, finance, health, education, Small Business Services, NYPD, and Economic Development Corporation are scheduled to arrive to lend their ears to Bronx residents who stop by Bronx Borough Hall that day. In some cases, as in the case of the City Resource Fair that took place in Staten Island last month to kick off the initiative, agency commissioners

We delve into just what the Police Department is doing to combat this sad epidemic. Behind the front pages you’ll find a related story on the Drug Enforcement Administration charging

Inquiring Photographer: Thoughts on NYPD Body Cams

This week we asked readers their thoughts on this week’s rollout of new NYPD body cameras to be worn by patrol officers. Honestly, I think it could go either way, but there are cameras all over. Basically, the NYPD has cameras on every corner, but the body cameras can be used in police brutality cases as evidence of what actually happened at a crime scene as the video shows what happened before or after an event. I think it could cause some privacy issues and people will feel like their rights are being violated. It’s a fact that they sometimes

The Economic Engine of Affordable Housing in the Bronx

From the Mill Brook Houses to Lafayette Boynton, families in the Bronx have always been on the front line of fighting for affordable housing. That fight has only taken on greater importance as the borough gets less and less affordable for low- and middle-income families who are struggling to make ends meet. Thankfully, the borough of the Bronx – and all of New York – has taken a huge step forward in combating our state’s dire housing crisis, as the Governor and State Legislature recently approved $2.5 billion for affordable and supportive housing. With over 88,000 New Yorkers still homeless

Editorial: Bring Zoning Down to the Essentials, and More Will Come

Have you ever had a conversation on what zoning is as it relates to New York City? Unless one is an urban planner, I doubt many can give a comprehensive version of the power behind zoning. In a nutshell, zoning governs how neighborhoods look across the city using a set of regulations or zoning codes that tell developers what’s allowed to be built in a neighborhood. Understanding the nitty gritty aspects of zoning poses major hurdles for anyone looking to gain control of their neighborhood’s fate, and it was pretty evident at a special Community Board 7 Land Use/Zoning and

Op-Ed: Raising the Age Saves Young Lives

For years New York has borne the unfortunate and unlikely distinction of being one of only two states in the U.S. that prosecutes 16- and 17-year olds as adults. Action by Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature has finally ended this barbaric practice that ruins young lives and threatens public safety. When a 16- or 17-year old is arrested and treated as an adult, there is no requirement to notify parents. The practice assumes that a child of this age knows her or his legal rights and has the knowledge and understanding to make an informed decision to
