Veterans, Honored and Remembered Locally, Continue to Serve the Community

  Throughout the northwest Bronx, various statues, plaques and memorials honor and remember those veterans who served the country, some of whom died in combat. Bronx Writer Chronicles Life as a 19-Year-Old

  Before Brianna Lopez turned 19, she decided to make a written record of her experiences during her last year as a teenager. In doing so, she decided that she wouldn’t hold back from sharing the ups and downs, the happy and sad times, the darkness and the hope she felt on the cusp of adulthood.   Through a combination of prose and poetry, Lopez, now 20, and a college junior in Miami who is majoring in professional writing, has self-published a collection of those experiences in a book entitled, “the nighttime series: a collection of poetry and short stories”

Deadline Extended to Nov. 6 for Communities of Color Nonprofit Stabilization Fund Grant

The New York Urban League and its partners invite community-based organizations (CBOs) to apply for a NYC Council Communities of Color Nonprofit Stabilization Fund (CCNSF) grant by the new extended deadline of Nov. 6, 2020 at 5 p.m.   The New York City Council established the Communities of Color Nonprofit Stabilization Fund (CCNSF) in recent years and has allocated $2.5 million to award grants to support Black, Latino, and Asian-led community-based organizations throughout New York City’s five boroughs.   The first New York City Council fund of its kind, CCNSF aims to build the capacity of New York City nonprofits

Morris Park: Celebrating Halloween in a Socially-Distanced World

Given that youngsters on both sides of Pelham Parkway often celebrate Halloween with an annual parade, the usual holiday excitement was a little less evident this year due to the parade being cancelled amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.   In an effort to try to make up for some of that lost fun, this year, officers from the NYPD’s 49th precinct on Eastchester Road in the Morris Park section of the Bronx, held the first, socially distant Pumpkin Carving event at their station-house. Public Art Installation by Fran Sisco Now at Pelham Art Center

A public installation of sculpture by artist, Fran Sisco, is now on view in the Pelham Art Center courtyard. The installation, entitled Nature Culture Sculpture, consists of three found wood assemblage sculptures by Sisco that reflect a message of unity and positivity.   The three sculptures, “My Kelly,” “Blessings of Trans Unicorns” and “Two in Love” are in the courtyard through March 2021.  The colorful pieces are constructed from dead tree limbs and emphasize the beauty in natural simplicity. Mott Haven: Historical Landmark Honored With Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award

    A Bronx landmark has been honored with the Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award, New York Landmarks Conservancy’s highest honors for excellence in preservation. Botanical Garden: Enid A. Haupt Conservatory Palm Dome Completed

On Monday, Sept. 14, 2020, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. attended the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Enid A. Haupt Conservatory palm dome which was recently completed.   The iconic venue reopened in accordance with “New York Forward” safety guidelines, with very limited capacity.
