Bronx Notes: Info Sessions for Free English Classes

The New York Public Library will host free daytime, evening, and weekend English classes. Speaking and listening classes for speakers of other languages and reading and writing for people who speak English will be held. Attend a mandatory information session on June 5 at 2 and 6 p.m. at Bronx Library Center, 310 E. Kingsbridge Rd. last month, photographer Lystria Hurley took these photos of Gabriela Salazar’s public art work, “For Closure (Outdoors, the Bronx).” The piece, displayed with assistance from the Bronx River Arts Center at the corner of East Tremont Avenue and Boston Road (near the West Farms Square subway station), is supposed to shed light on the housing crisis.

Bronx Notes: Friends of Van Cortlandt Park 20th Birthday Party and Fundraiser

Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, a nonprofit organization that advocates for and provides programming and activities at the sprawling northwest Bronx park, are holding a celebration and fundraiser tonight, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bronx Ale House (216 W. 238th St.) to celebrate 20 years of existence and service. It’s $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Ticket price will include: your first beer, a “Celebrating 20 Years” FVCP pint glass, appetizers and Happy Hour prices. A few things FVCP are involved in: They created a map of Van Cortlandt Park that you can download for free.

The public is invited to the free 22nd annual Bronx Day at the New York Botanical Garden with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. on Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Clay Family Picnic Pavilions. Activities include face painting, musical entertainment, and finance and health resources.

Bronx Beer Hall Preview at Valentine-Varian House
