Alongside gunshot survivor, gun control activist, and former Democratic U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, New York government officials, and other gun safety advocates, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed into State law a new package of six bills on Wednesday, Oct. 9, which elected officials say will strengthen New York’s gun laws, by taking action against dangerous “pistol convertors,” by requiring gun sellers to post tobacco-style safety warnings on their products, and by providing other new tools and resources to help protect more New Yorkers from gun violence.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced on Wednesday, Oct. 9, that a former nursing assistant at the James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fordham Manor has been sentenced to five years probation after pleading guilty to stealing a patient’s credit card and purchasing food deliveries, shoes and other items.

Additional residents have shared their experience of the residential fire that broke out on Tuesday evening, Oct. 8, in Fordham Manor which resulted in eight people being hospitalized due to smoke inhalation, including one elderly woman reported to be around 80 years of age who is in critical condition.
