Representatives from the New York City & Vicinity District Council of Carpenters said the union delivered over 2,000 toys to children throughout The Bronx and New York City this last holiday season. They said the union partnered with local elected officials and community organizations for 14 different events throughout New York City, including four in The Bronx. They said that the holiday season is joyful but can be difficult for so many New Yorkers, and union carpenters and contractors wanted to do their part to give back to those in need.
Various elected officials came together for this year’s holiday toy drives in The Bronx, including Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, State Senator Jamaal T. Bailey (S.D. 36), Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (A.D.83), Assembly Member Chantel Jackson (A.D. 79), City Council Member Diana Ayala (C.D. 8), Council Member Althea Stevens (C.D. 16 ), and Council Member Kevin Riley (C.D. 12).
“The best part of the holiday season is the opportunity to give back and connect with members of the community,” said Gibson. “I am honored to partner with the New York City & Vicinity District Council of Carpenters and deliver smiles to children in need throughout the Bronx this holiday season.”
Across New York City, union carpenters participated in 14 toy drives in an effort to alleviate stress on families, spread kindness, and foster holiday cheer. Giving back to the community is one of the New York City & Vicinity District Council of Carpenters’ core values. The annual toy drives are part of a larger effort to give back and uplift communities to build a better New York.
Of the event, the union’s executive secretary-treasurer, Joseph Geiger said, “I am so proud of all the union carpenters who have donated their time and resources this holiday season to support the communities where we live and work by ensuring children in need receive a holiday gift.” He added, “Our commitment to making a positive impact in the Bronx community reflects the true spirit of our union value to build a brighter future for all New Yorkers. We hope everyone has a joyful and healthy holiday surrounded by family and friends.”
For his part, Heastie said, “Working alongside Union Carpenters is always a wonderful experience.” He added, “Year after year we collaborate to bring holiday cheer to the Bronx Community, and seeing the smiles of the children and families makes all our efforts worthwhile. When we work together to uplift the community, we can make a difference in the lives of so many New Yorkers. All children deserve the joy of receiving a gift this holiday season and I am proud to assist in making it a reality.”
