The Bronx Youth Empowerment Program will be hosting its 15th Youth Speaks 2021 forum on Wednesday, May 19, at 4 p.m. According to organizers, this year’s forum will be centered on music and art, as program participants will be joined by a dynamic guest panel.
It will include Tara Wallace of Love and Hip-Hop New York; MC Sha Rock, the first female rapper and MC of Hip-Hop culture; Valerie Simpson, legendary songwriter, music producer, singer and performer; and Kylerr Bucano, social media manager of the Universal Hip-Hop Museum.
Aside from the discussions on music and art, Youth Speaks is a forum and safe space that allows youth to express their concerns as they grow up in today’s society. Organizers say that as the official opening of the new Universal Hip-Hop Museum (UHHM) approaches, which will be located at Bronx Terminal Market in the South Bronx, Youth Speaks 2021 Music and Arts serves as the perfect starting point to discuss the history and progression of hip-hop and its culture.
Anchored in the birthplace of Hip Hop, UHHM is the official museum of Hip Hop founded by its pioneers. The museum celebrates and preserves the history of local and global Hip Hop music and culture from the past, present and future, and according to its founders, was built as a space for audiences, artists, and technology to converge and create unparalleled educational and entertainment experiences. The museum will officially open its doors in 2023, but has a sneak preview of what’s to come is currently on display at the museum. For more information, visit www.UHHM.org.
Meanwhile, Youth Speaks 2021 will be streaming on Zoom, as well as on Facebook and Youtube. See attached flyer for log-in information.
As reported by Norwood News, during the recent Bronx Week 2021 celebrations, three Bronxites with links to the Hip Hop music industry were honored on the Bronx Walk of Fame, each with an individual street renaming. The class of 2021 includes photographer, Joe Conzo Jr., who was also featured in a separate Norwood News story earlier this year on another matter, DJ, Kid Capri, and music executive, Sal Abbatiello.
Norwood News also reported recently on the mural which was recently painted by Queens-based artist, Efren Andaluz, of the late, Grammy award-nominated, Hip Hop artist, DMX, on the wall next to La Estrella Tropical Restaurant at the junction of Burke Avenue and Holland Avenue in Williamsbridge.
