Bronx Sports Roundup: Bronx Basketball Rivalries, Praise for Bronx Girl’s Soccer

With the football season winding down (see below), it’s time to make way for the Bronx basketball season and also recognize some borough soccer stars in this week’s edition of The Bronx Sports Roundup!

To get you hyped for the hoops season, here’s a nice mix of the Bronx’s own Kemba Walker doing work for the University Connecticut, which he carried to the national title this year. (Somewhat disappointingly, but not too disappointingly because it sounds good, the mix uses a Jay-Z song about Brooklyn to accompany the Bronxite’s highlights). Walker, drafted ninth overall by the Charlotte Bobcats this summer, will have to catch up quickly after a long lockout by NBA owners kept players from practicing with their teams until now. The NBA and its players recently entered into a labor deal that will have the season starting on Christmas day.

Wings Academy and John F. Kennedy High School, whose PSAL basketball programs are ranked 7th and 8th, respectively, by the New York Post, will face off this Thursday in Mott Haven for borough bragging rights. Both teams are undefeated on the young season, at 2-0, so one team will come out with its first loss of the season.

The Post is highlighting the accomplishments of this year’s Bronx girl’s soccer teams. Rachel Copulsky, of Riverdale High School, earned the Post‘s All-Bronx girl’s soccer Player of the Year award. She helped the Falcons lengthen their win streak to 41 games and lead them to their second straight NYSAISAA title. Preston High School’s Jack Giannini won coach of the year. The Post credited his “relaxed and simple” demeanor for getting his Panthers into the semifinals.

For those looking for the college version of an intra-Bronx basketball rivalry, Fordham University and Manhattan College, located less than four miles from each other, also match up on Wednesday in Riverdale at 7 p.m. But the teams seem headed in opposite directions.

Fordham’s basketball team dropped its last game, 78-60, to Lehigh after making only six shots from the free throw line. Fordham is now 2-3 on the season. The Rams largely kept pace with Lehigh, but the Mountain Hawks rallied to an 11-4 run in the second half to build a lead they would never relinquish. Lehigh hit all 12 of their last free throws to put the game out of reach for Fordham.  But the Rams have a chance to redeem themselves tonight at 7 pm against Hampton at home in the Rose Hill gym.

Meanwhile, Manhattan College defeated St. Peter 68-42 to push one game above .500 at 5-4.  For this game, a solid defense was the best offense, as Coach Steve Masiello said stops and were a big reason for the win. “When you can get stops like we did, it gets you out on the break and lets you get a lot of easy looks,” he said to school sports reporters. He also praised Sophomore Rhamel Brown for blocking six shots to go with nine rebounds on the game.

Monroe College is the top ranked junior college team in country.

In high school football news, the PSAL championship game will be played in the Boogie Down tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium. The game will feature two Brooklyn schools, Erasmus Hall (which beat the Bronx’s Kennedy in the first round of the playoffs) and Lincoln (which took out Clinton in the semis last week). Here’s a preview. If you can’t or don’t plan on attending the game, the Post is live blogging it.
