The Embattled Eagle Academy Marches On
The Eagle Academy boy’s team, the number three seed in the Bronx borough playoffs (and they probably deserved a two-seed), goes into tonight’s semifinal match-up against JFK with a total of three wins on the season, according to the Public School Athletic League website. They were forced to forfeit their first 11 games played by point guard Gerard Carty, who the PSAL has deemed ineligible because he is a fifth-year senior, according to the NY Post. The Post‘s anonymous sources dispute this claim.

It’s unclear how the forfeits will affect Eagle’s seeding in the citywide playoffs coming up next week, but the loss of Carty has not stopped them from winning. Since losing by four to Wings Academy on Jan. 19, Eagle has reeled off five straight wins, including a 58-42 quarterfinal win over a much-improved Evander Childs team on Tuesday.

In other Bronx sports news:

In the other boy’s semifinal game, Wings Academy takes on Mott Haven campus, at 6 p.m. at Wings. Because of its recent success, Mott Haven plans to move up to the more competitive AA Division next year.

Wings star Justin Jenkins continues his senior season diary for the Post.

JFK girl’s basketball coach O’Neil Glenn talks about his failed NFL career that led him to a career in education and coaching.

Glenn’s squad got back to its winning ways last night.

Columbus High School senior sprinter Strymar Livingstone broke his second national high school record in two weeks.

And we can’t forget about the Giants’ Super Bowl victory on Sunday. The Giants don’t have any Bronx players, but the team did play in the borough’s Yankee Stadium from 1956 to 1977. Plus, Giants star receiver Victor Cruz has popularized the borough’s signature salsa dance in the NFL mainstream. Here’s a video montage set to original salsa music:

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
