Bronx Sports Report: Borough Catholic Boys Teams Representing and Other HS Hoops Updates

This is the penultimate weekend of New York City high school basketball playoff games. All of the public school divisions have semifinal match-ups and the Catholic league will crown a champion. A handful of Bronx teams still in the running have legitimate title shots.

The Boogie Down was heavily represented in the Catholic High School Athletic Association boys semifinal round, with three teams in the Final Four: St. Raymond’s, Cardinal Hayes and Mt. St. Michael.

On Sunday, the Mt. St. Michael Mountaineers earned its semifinal appearance with a shocking upset of two-time defending champs Christ the King, which was again a favorite to repeat behind University of Connecticut recruit Omar Calhoun. But stocky sparkplug Mount guard Malik Gill upstaged Calhoun, dropping 30 points and helping hold Calhoun to just 16. But Mount fell flat in 55-40 Wednesday night loss against Holy Cross, a deep team that thrives without a true star.

Holy Cross moves on to play St. Raymond’s, which won the Bronx title last week (in a gritty performance against Mount) and appears to be peaking at just the right time. The previous two years, the Ravens, led by coach Oliver Antigua, had lost in the semifinals to Christ the King. This year, behind senior stars Daniel Dingle and Kerwin Okoro, St. Ray’s edged Bronx rival Cardinal Hayes, 54-53, in the semis for a birth in the final. The Ravens, who had lost to Cardinal Hayes twice during the regular season, are looking for their first Catholic league title since 2007.

St. Ray’s takes on Holy Cross for the championship at Fordham University’s Rose Hill Gym at 3 p.m. MSG Varsity will be broadcasting the game live.

In other high school hoops action:

A trio of Boogie Down squads are in the semifinals this weekend.

— Mott Haven Campus, the number one seed in the boys A tournament (they are moving up to bang with the big boys in AA next year), faces off against Bedford Academy at 5 p.m. at City College.

— The Samuel Gompers girls team plays Scholars Academy at 11 a.m. at Hunter College for a chance to play for girls B division championship.

— With star Justin Jenkins struggling, Wings Academy junior Marvilio Berroa exploded for 20 points in leading his team to a win over Cardoza and entry into the AA boys division semis. Wings play Jefferson tomorrow at 3 p.m. at St. John’s University.

In other Bronx sports news:

After losing in its conference tournament, the Manhattan College men’s team, enjoying the biggest turnaround in the NCAA Division I this year, accepted an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), which is otherwise known as that other tournament teams that don’t make it into the NCAA or NIT tourneys.

The Post is holding a poll to find out who readers believe is the city’s best track & field athlete. The Boogie Down is represented by Columbus runner Strymar Livingstone, who set national records in the 500 and 600 meters and won the state 600-meter title.

Both of Monroe College’s men’s and women’s teams are playing for births into the national junior college tournaments at the school’s gym in New Rochelle.
