Bronx Photos: E. 204th St. Summer Streets Slideshow

Local photographer Adi Talwar offers his take on the Summer Streets festival on East 204th Street in Norwood on Sunday, Aug. 11. The event was hosted by the East 204th Street and Bainbridge Avenue Merchants Association.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. It was actually Stahl Baum’s and we hung out there for years 1952 – 1957. Across the street was the Bainbridge Theatre and Mrs. Carey was the usher.
Great times and no gangs to worry about except the guys that came over from Villa Ave.

I do, I hung out here with friends from St. Brendan’s in the mid 60’s. My Dad hung here when he went to St. Brendan’s and he called it Stahl’s. Great egg creams and cherry cokes!

My name is Joe, Paul Hinck and I were friends. I helped in the basement making ice cream and saw the store close down after the McDonald’s forced his dad out. Paul left for military school and I lost my friend. A few days before the store closed, I sat with his dad and had a hamburger, I was the only one in the store. My folks took me up to the Military school to visit Paul, who was now in uniform with his classmates. Sadly, he basically ignored me. Oh well, we were just kids. I never heard from him again. If this is Paul, I do not know if you remember me. Hope you are well.

I had my first egg cream here in 1964 or 65. I went to St. Brendan’s, lived on Decatur Ave, and we called it Stahl Baum’s because that’s what our parents called it -my Dad grew up on Hull Ave. Loved the old fashioned ice cream parlor atmosphere, and the egg creams and cherry cokes!
