The Bronx Opera presents two performances of the beloved family opera “Hansel and Gretel” by Engelbert Humperdinck on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, at 7.30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, at 2.30 p.m. at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theater, located at 250 Bedford Park Blvd. West in The Bronx. The artistic director of the Bronx Opera is Ben Spierman and the conductor is Michael Spierman.
Humperdinck described his opera as a Marchenoper (fairy-tale opera). The libretto was written by his sister, Adelheid Wette, based on the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale of the same name. The opera has been associated with Christmas since its earliest performances, and today, it is still most often performed around Christmas time. It is much admired for its folk music-inspired themes, one of the most famous being the “Abendsegen” (Evening Benediction) from Act II.
Hansel and Gretel premiered Dec. 23, 1893 at the Hoftheater in Weimar, conducted by Richard Strauss. The Hamburg premiere took place the following year, conducted by Gustav Mahler.
