Bronx Notes: Winterfest at Williamsbridge Oval Park and Poe Birthday Celebration

Lots of action going on at northwest Bronx parks (Williamsbridge Oval and Poe) tomorrow and why not, it is the Bronx park system’s 125th birthday this year, right?

At Williamsbridge Oval Park, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Parks Department is holding its annual Winterfest. Here are the details from a press release sent out earlier today:

“On the stage there’s a full line-up of programming and entertainment, including a recital by the St. Mary’s Recreation Center ‘South Bronx Kids’ dance troupe and a vocal performance by local singer, Tatiana.

“You’ll be able to shake your hips to the salsa beat and keep them shaking with a hula hoop competition from the NY Walker’s Club. The Swedish Cottage marionette puppeteers will show you how they make puppets come to life, or you can participate in a team building activity with staff from the Alley Pond Adventure Course, or a sports clinic with the Knick’s Groove Truck. The day will also include arts & crafts, fitness tips, board games, raffles, and much more!”

And at Poe Park, same time (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), there will be a 163rd birthday party for literary legend and park namesake Edgar Allan Poe, which you can also watch live on the internet. Here’s the link: www.livestream.com/smnny.Lovers of Edgar Allan Poe all over the world are invited to attend or tune into “Poe at Poe Park,” a celebration of his 163rd birthday with a dramatic presentation of selected works performed by a cast of prominent actors and musicians. Selections will be read in several languages, reflecting Poe’s versatility as a writer, while spotlighting the works he produced in The Bronx from 1846 to his death in 1849.

“Poe at Poe Park” pays tribute to one of The Bronx’s most distinguished borough residents while celebrating the ongoing cultural renaissance at Poe Park. Since opening its doors in 2011, Poe Park Visitors Center has become a hub of arts and culture on the Grand Concourse.

“Poe at Poe Park” features actor, arts promoter and longtime Bronx resident Walter Krochmal, accompanied by a distinguished group of stage, screen and voice-over performers. It is directed by Hossein Fassa – former Executive Director of the Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting. This program is produced in association with Bronx World Film, Inc. and Golden King Productions, Inc.

Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
