Bronx Notes: ‘P-Star Rising’ at Bronx Doc Center

On Saturday at 8:15 p.m., the Bronx Documentary Center, 614 Courtlandt Ave., is showing “P-Star Rising,” a new documentary about Priscilla Diaz, a New York City product who started rapping at an early age and eventually became a television star. The film follows her over the course of four years. After the showing, there will be a Q & A with Diaz and the film’s director, Gabriel Noble. Above is the trailer for the film. Below is a blurb about the film from a press release:

Rapper Priscilla Diaz was dazzling New York nightclub crowds at age nine. But chasing music stardom isn’t child’s play when you live in a shelter, your mom’s an addict and your dad’s struggling to keep the family afloat. “P-Star Rising” is a film about a single father who is determined that his 9-year-old daughter become a rap star and thus redeem his deferred dream.

And here’s an MTV story about her when she first burst onto the scene:

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
