Bronx Notes: High School Admissions, Round 2 (Fair Tomorrow in Manhattan)

Overview: Almost 75 percent of eighth graders were matched with one of their top three high school choices when acceptance offers were sent out in mid-March. But that still leaves thousands of students with either one of their lesser choices or no choice at all. Round 2 of the DOE’s high school admissions process gives these students a chance to improve their lot or at least change it.

Finding a School: Many of the schools with seats to fill, especially those starting up this fall, will be promoting themselves at a High School Fair on April 6 and 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational Campus in Manhattan (122 Amsterdam Ave., at 66th Street). Insideschools.org also has profiles of most city schools. And here is the DOE’s directory of Bronx high schools and the directory of new schools and programs.

Deadlines: Parents and students will have until the following Friday, April 12, to submit their applications to their school’s guidance counselors. Applicants should receive acceptances by late May.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. The NYC DOE has turned this whole process into a lottery, basically. It’s a shame that the two best high schools in the Bronx don’t have any seats reserved for high achieving Bronx students. Our students have to compete with 28,000 others in order to get placed. Meanwhile, District 2 in Manhattan gets to ‘protect’ their population by offering admissions only to District 2 students.
