Good morning, folks, and welcome to the Thursday edition of our Bronx News Roundup. Here are the Bronx news stories we’re following today. Weather: Another day of overcast mugginess with a chance of showers at any moment.
Residents at two public housing complexes in the south Bronx say the city is neglecting to make badly needed repairs and are threatening to sue if something isn’t done soon.
Two Bronx charter schools received 5,900 applications for 190 slots as parents scramble to find alternatives to traditional public schools.
Police arrested a Bronx man who they say was running a million-dollar-a-month prescription drug ring.
Yesterday, Montefiore Medical Center held an event to encourage New Yorkers to become organ and tissue donors and to clear up the misconceptions about doing so. “Families and the community need to realize that this is a procedure that is safe, that is guarded by guidelines and policies to assure fairness,” said Dr. Frederick Kaskel, the director of pediatric nephrology, according to NY1.

The Times explores the controversy surrounding FreshDirect’s pending move to the Bronx and recent announcement that they would be start serving all Bronx zip codes. Most of the Bronxites cited, save one, said they were against FreshDirect’s arrival or that they wouldn’t use the service anyway. Best quote:
“This is my FreshDirect right here,” said Ali Rivera, 56, a former cook who spent $3 for four pears and five nectarines at a stand in Fordham Plaza.
(Important side note: After we posted about this yesterday and said the $130 million in city and state subsidies (it’s actually $128 million) for FreshDirect were already approved, Bettina Damiani, from Good Jobs NY, e-mailed us to say that is not the case. She says it is a common misconception (the Times reported their approval just as we did, which makes me feel better) that the subsidies are a done deal. In fact, the city subsidies have only received preliminary approval and state subsidies still require a hearing before they can be approved.)
Quick shout out to the Daily News Bronx bureau for graciously hosting and talking with our Bronx Youth Journalism Initiative students yesterday evening. Our budding Bronx reporters got a lot out of it. Thanks!
