As the borough once again excavates out of the frozen tundra, our brethren of journalists brewed up some interesting pieces during the mid-winter. With that, here’s another Bronx News Roundup:
Snow was on the mind for many Bronx journalists as the latest batch brought over eight inches of the white stuff to the borough, resting on top of the several inches of snow that remained. News 12 The Bronx gets the gold for covering the event from all angles, even talking to one Riverdale florist who blames a profit plunge on the temperature plunge. Honorable mention to The New York Times for covering the perils of unplowed streets in the Bronx.
Our pal Bob “Kappy” Kappstatter of The Bronx Times Reporter breaks down some potential races for this election season, including one involving Councilman Fernando Cabrera set to challenge State Senator Gustavo Rivera. According to Kappy, Cabrera has formed an exploratory committee weighing his options on whether he has enough clout to take over Rivera’s 33rd District. It’s certainly would be an intriguing race to watch.
Major development is now underway along the Sheridan Expressway. The Bronx Times Reporter was there to give the lowdown on Compass Residences, which broke ground last month. The groundbreaking caps a seven-year fight to have the area rezoned specifically for the massive development project, intended to be built in three phases.
The Hunts Point Express profiles a magazine by women, for women called POP (Power of the People). The Point CDC’s W.O.M.E.N’s group crafted the quarterly magazine, which is expected to feature a woman on each of the zine’s front cover.
And finally, here’s a fitting story for this winter: the annual Polar Bear Swim…in the Bronx?!? While it’s common to hear about the Brooklyn Polar Bears, the Bronx has its own annual swim at Orchard Beach. The Daily News served up a preview of what’s expected this Saturday, with a group of brave swimmers who look forward to the yearly dip.
