Bronx News Roundup, Sept. 25

Welcome back to another edition of the Bronx News Roundup here on the Norwood News‘ Breaking Bronx blog. Here are the stories we’re following today, starting with the weather: Gorgeous — sunny, clear, not humid, breezy, high in the mid-70s. Enjoy.

Let me just say this about the 25-year-old dude who jumped into the Bronx Zoo’s tiger den last week, apparently to be “one with the tigers”: Wow. Strange times, dear readers. Strange times. ABC News has the story:

The “People’s Priest” of the Bronx, Rev. John Flynn, died on Monday at the age of 83. Flynn declined to become a monsignor so he could remain a parish priest at churches throughout the Bronx, including St. Raymond’s in Parkchester and St. Marin of Tours in Crotona. In the NY Times obituary, Fordham professor Mark Naison said this about Flynn to reporter Winnie Hu: “Greatness takes many forms. It is not always associated with wealth and power and fame. In the Bronx, it may have reached its highest point in the person of a parish priest who walked the street with the lost boys of the community while bullets were flying. And who those boys learned to love as much as everyone else who knew him.”

The vehicular homicide trial against former Bronx detective Kevin Spellman began this week with a cop testifying that Spellman appeared drunk at the scene of a 2009 accident in which Spellman hit and killed an Albanian immigrant grandmother with his car, the Daily News reports.

Former NYC Police Commish Bernard Kerik, who is serving prison time in Maryland for taking bribes, will be in the Bronx this week to testify against the brothers who he claims provided the bribes in the form of free housing renovations, the Times reports.

Dangerous levels of methane gas have been found in the areas next to the Ferry Point golf course Donald Trump is building, the Daily News reports. The site is on top of a former dump. Also check out the DN’s story on one of the golf course’s contractors and its ties to a company embroiled in a bribery scandal.

The “colossal” new sculpture exhibit by Spaniard Manolo Valdes at the New York Botanical Garden here in the Bronx made the 3,800-mile trip across the Atlantic on four different ships, the DN reports.

Dr. Vishal Sarwahi is pioneering a minimally invasive scoliosis surgery technique at Montefiore Medical Center, one of only a handful of medical centers offering such a type of surgery. [NY1]

According to the New York Business Journal, the Bronx has the largest gap between woman and men of all the five boroughs — it’s 53.1% female to 46.9% male.

NY1 takes a look at the new Hunts Point Landing, which provides Bronxites with some fishing access.

Ladies, marathon-running vegetarian Adam Orna, who lives in the Bronx, is available and not afraid to advertise it on a handmade sign in Union Square. Hopefully, he’s not standing next to the creepy guy giving out free hugs. [Times]

In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts.
