Bronx News Roundup: Primed for Primary Day

Polls opened today at 6 a.m. here in the Bronx and throughout the five boroughs. Here’s a quick roundup of all the latest and most poignant Bronx stories going into the primary. We’ll be out in the field today, seeing how it’s going on the streets and inside polling sites. Look out for our Tweets (@norwoodnews). Also, we can’t be everywhere (there’s only one of us today!), so let us know how your voting experience went. Tweet at us by using our handle (@norwoodnews) with your experiences — thoughts, photos, horror stories — or email us at norwoodnews@norwoodnews.org.

— The Riverdale Press went in-depth on its coverage of the 11th Council District race, which pits Andrew Cohen vs. Cliff Stanton:

In our post about the 15th Council District race, we wrote about the mega influence of Job for New York, the political action committee spearheaded by the Real Estate Board of New York, the city’s most powerful real estate lobbying group. The Press points out, they’re spending also spending big bucks on the 11th District race — $146,176 in favor of Andrew Cohen and $30,929 against Cliff Stanton.

The Press also has an analysis of the race about how Cohen’s backing by the Bronx Democratic establishment gives him almost an incumbent’s advantage in the coming election, but doesn’t discount a possible upset by Stanton.

Here, the Press breaks down the policy differences (and many similarities) between the two candidates.

And here, they take a look at how candidates are campaigning.

For more on the two candidate, check out the debate Norwood News hosted back in early August:

— The Daily News talks to Mark Escofferey-Bey, the obscure Democratic candidate running a “quixotic” campaign against Ruben Diaz Jr. for Bronx Borough President. The DN asked him who he is and why he thinks he can win:

“Mark Escoffery-Bey is powerful, inspirational and unstoppable. I see possibilities, I create possibilities, and I act upon them. I don’t focus on what’s wrong, I focus on what’s possible. I believe I have a chance in this race because the people finally have a choice. It’s easy for you to be a rock star if you’ve never been challenged in the political arena.”

— Diaz Jr., former BP Freddy Ferrer and several other Bronx Democrats are backing Bill Thompson for mayor in today’s mayoral primary, the NY Times points out. But the Bronx Dems are far from united in their support for Thompson. State Senator Gustavo Rivera is working hard for Christine Quinn. Luis Sepulveda and Ruth Hassell-Thompson are supporting Bill de Blasio. State Senator and Reverend Ruben Diaz Sr. is backing long-shot Erick Salgado, a Christian pastor who, I believe, is the only candidate born in the Bronx.

— Here’s a nice interactive feature by the Times to help you figure out where the mayoral candidates stand on the issue.

— The Bronx Times’ Bob Kappstatter writes that the party establishment’s advantage, which is amplified in races with a small turnout, may be somewhat diluted this primary because of the hotly contested mayoral contest, which will get more people to the pols.

— The DN takes a look at the 16th Council District candidates.

— And again, here’s our breakdown of the wide-open 15th Council District race.

Happy Voting!

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
