These are the Bronx news stories we’re following today:
— Judge Patricia DiMango, a State Supreme Court justice, has been brought in to the Bronx from Brooklyn to deal with the major backlog of cases in the Bronx Courthouse, the New York Times reports. In the six months she’s been working in the Bronx she has gone through more than 500 cases, slashing the backlog of cases over two years old by 40 percent.
— The New York Times posted their own article about the lack of an LGBTQ center here. Members of the LGBTQ community feel more unsafe now than they have the past, particularly in the wake of the closure of the old LGBT Community Pride Center last year. — Former congressman and mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner left a Bronx mayoral forum early last night, P0liticker reports. As a result, the media followed Weiner out of the Thessalonia Worship Center, leaving the forum largely uncovered.
— A volunteer for City Council District 11 candidate, Cliff Stanton, has challenged candidate Shelley Keeling’s petitions to get on the ballot, the Riverdale Press reports. Volunteer Ms. Sanchez claims that many of the signatures on Keeling’s petition are either fraudulent, from New Yorkers living outside District 11, or from voters not registered with the Democratic Party.
– The 24th Dominican Day Parade was held on Sunday in the Bronx, NY1 reports. Thousands of people lined up along the streets of Mount Hope as they celebrated their Caribbean heritage with Dominican flags and more than 30 floats passing by.
— The New York Commission on Judicial Conduct is investigating a complaint against Bronx Supreme Court Judge La Tia Martin, who made rulings on a divorce case even though her husband was one of the lawyers for one of the litigants, NBC New York reports. According to New York’s Code of Judicial Conduct, “a judge shall disqualify himself or herself in a proceeding in which the judge’s impartiality might reasonably be questioned.”
