Bronx News Roundup, Oct. 25

Welcome back to the Bronx News Roundup. Here are the Bronx-related stories we’re following today.

This story sounds like something you’d see on TV cop show: An off-duty police officer who lives in University Heights  was shot in the chest after stopping to intervene in a robbery, then ended up shooting one of the suspected robbers in the head (killing him) while bleeding from his wound. Here’s how Commish Ray Kelly describes it, via the NY Times:

“Holding his left hand over his wound, with his gun in his right hand, Officer Marcano moved to the middle of the street, took cover behind a livery cab, yelled to passers-by to get down and fired,” Mr. Kelly said. “He moved a second time, still holding his hand over his wound, to the west side of Harrison Avenue, where he took cover behind a parked car and fired another round at the suspects.”

Officer Ivan Marcano is in stable condition, while police are still searching for another two suspects who fled the scene.

Daily News Bronx Bureau Chief Patrice O’Shaughnessy has the sad story of a Bronx couple who used their young kids to help sell heroin.

A Bronx family continues to search for answers in the cycling death of Joseph Nelson back in April, DNAinfo reports.

The Bronx is getting Greener, politically, the Riverdale Press reports.
