News still abounds in the hot borough of the Bronx as the latest edition of Bronx News Roundup highlights some juicy stories from our Bronx journalism brethren.
First up is some intriguing news out from our pal Bob “Kappy” Kappstatter at The Bronx Times Reporter. Kappy reports that Senate Co-Leader Sen. Jeff Klein and Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj have partnered to start a political club that could rival already established clubs within Klein/Gjonaj’s district, which include the Liberty Democratic Association. In Norwood, the Northwest Bronx Liberty Democrats could also be impacted. Gjonaj assured Kappy his district is big enough for groups not to be completely affected. This one’s worth a read.
Keeping with the politics theme, turns out the City Council Speaker will now back State Senator Adriano Espaillat for his run in the 13th Congressional District, competing against Charles Rangel. This is an about-face for Viverito who supported Rangel during the 2012 Primary when Espaillat challenged Rangel. Espaillat officially entered the race, looking for a rematch against the seasoned elected official. Viverito told the Daily News decisions like this are never easy.
The Daily News has a story of video showing cops roughing up an angry bus rider removed from a Bx12 bus. Some scary moments show a shouting match between the man and officers escalates, forcing officers to tackle the suspect to the ground before arresting him. The video has gone viral, eliciting plenty of responses from social media sites.
And finally some economic development news from The Wall Street Journal calculating the number of new retail space coming to the borough to be 1.4 million, far outpacing the rest of the rest of the country. Hopefully, it can put a dent into the staggering unemployment rate.
And that’s about it for this edition. Be sure to check out Bronx News Roundup next week!
