Bronx News Roundup, May 31

Good morning, lovely people, and welcome to the Thursday edition of the Bronx News Roundup. Here are the Bronx stories we’re following today on the Breaking Bronx blog. Weather: Gorgeous. Sunny, high of 84, nice little breeze, not too humid.

On the heels of FreshDirect’s mega subsidy deal (which isn’t yet a done deal) and pending move to the south Bronx waterfront, another online delivery company, CookiesKids.com, an off-shoot of the Cookies retail store, is asking the Industrial Development Agency for $3.4 million in tax breaks to move its operation from Brooklyn to the south Bronx, just across the street from the FreshDirect site. Though the $3.4 million number pales in comparison to FreshDirect’s $128 million, CookiesKids.com could face increase scrutiny following all the attention given to FreshDirect’s deal. It will mean even more delivery trucks polluting an area with high asthma rates. New full-time employees at CookiesKids.com would make $15,000 a year (no health benefits), while veteran employees would make less than 19,000 per year.

The Riverdale Press says regardless of what you think about FreshDirect’s subsidy package or compounding of asthma problems, the company did the right thing in providing delivery to all of the Bronx zip codes.

MetroFocus explores how the Bronx’s Herbert H. Lehman High School ended up in the federal turnaround program and how it will affect the school that replaces it in the future.

During the first three months of the year, Bronx students made up 33 percent of arrests and 55 percent of summonses handed out by school police citywide. The New York Civil Liberties Union released the report yesterday, saying it highlights the “heavy-handed” policing of city schools. A lawsuit against the practice of arresting students in school filed by the NYCLU is pending.

Bloomberg wants to ban the sale of large-sized sugary drinks to combat rising obesity rates.

Bronx war veterans held a brainstorming session on Tuesday to generate ideas on how to get veterans back to work. A new veterans housing complex is set to open up in Kingsbridge Heights in a few weeks. (We wrote about the difficulties veterans are having finding employment a couple of weeks ago.)

Lincoln Hospital earned “advanced certification” for its palliative care efforts.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
