Happy Friday everyone and welcome back to another edition of the Bronx News Roundup. Here’s a look at the Bronx stories we’re following today, starting with the weather forecast: A heat advisory is once again in effect as temperatures will again rise into the mid-90s. The humidity is expected to break with thunderstorms coming tonight. Should be sunny and slightly cooler over the weekend, with a high of 87 on Saturday and a high of 83 on Sunday.

Cops rescued nearly 50 dogs, mostly pit bulls, that were being held in unseemly conditions in the basement of a Mt. Eden apartment building. Police believe the dogs were being used for dog fighting and arrested the building’s super, Raul Sanchez, and charged him with multiple counts of animal cruelty. “The injuries we’ve seen are typical of dog fighting. A lot of scars, old wounds. When you saw the animals come out, you saw the white marks on their front paws and faces. That isn’t hair. Those are all wounds and scars that have healed over,” said Howard Lawrence, ASPCA Senior Director of Operations and Humane Law Enforcement, according to PIX.

The FX network ordered a pilot of a new Denis Leary-produced show called “Bronx Warrants,” which is based on the lives of two real life Boogie Down warrant detectives, David Joglar and Richard Wetzel, who bring in people with outstanding warrants for bonus money. Leary said he was excited about the project after hearing about Joglar and Wetzel’s “insane exploits” on the job. Leary previously starred in FX’s “Rescue Me,” about an FDNY firehouse. [Screen Rant]

A Bronx man was sentenced to 92 months in prison for trying to sell carbon fiber to Iran, a violation of a U.S. trade embargo. [Daily News]

Lenin Garcia, who was tortured with a hot iron during a home invasion at his Grand Concourse apartment building, is suing his landlord for $15 million for not having working locks on the doors to the building. [Daily News]

Bronx/Westchester Congressman Eliot Engel received a personal loan from a major campaign contributor to purchase a co-op apartment, but refuses to discuss the terms of loans. [Daily News]

A tow truck driver who was shot in the head last night, managed to walk two blocks to the 44th Precinct after being wounded. He was then taken to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition. [NY Post]

Riverdale’s RiverFest is happening this Sunday. The Daily News‘ Tanyanika Samuels writes that the fest is not just a good time, it’s also about advocating for a greenway that would connect the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail in Yonkers (through Riverdale) to the Manhattan waterfront greenway. The RiverFest is from noon to 6 p.m. at the College of Mt. St. Vincent.

A Bronx man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for killing an Upper Eastside Holocaust survivor in 2009. [NBC]

A 26-year-old man disappeared after either jumping or falling off of a party boat near City Island yesterday. [Post]

More bad news from Pedro Espada. The Post reports that the ex-Bronx pol, already convicted on fraud charges, will have to wait until next year for his retrial on related charges. That will come after his trial for alleged tax crimes, which is scheduled to start in November. On top of that, a Bronx judge refused to order the state to give Espada’s Soundview healthcare clinics Medicaid reimbursement or stop the state from closing the facilities he founded in the late 1970s.

Dr. Martha Adams Sullivan, the executive director of the Fordham-Tremont Mental Health Center, is the new head of the National Association of Social Workers’ New York chapter. [Daily News]

The prosecution and defense traded opening arguments in the re-trial of Bronx Councilman Larry Seabrook, who stands accused of steering government funds into his own pockets and those of his family members. [Times]

St. Raymond’s Elementary School, dedicated a garden to one of its former students, Jaslyn Gonzalez, who was killed along with several family members when their vehicle crashed off of the Bronx River Parkway.
